Hermes Saga


The Backrooms is a reckless world, an anomalous collection of realms all impossible to comprehend, but its tales remain rooted in humanity. Whether born there or on Earth, each person still has their hopes, emotions, and struggles, which influence the factions they assist as they shape the world around them.

The Hermes Saga is one of these tales, an anthology of short stories following the individual growth of three Team Hermes operatives, Anthony, Katya, and Charlie, as their faction's struggle to collaborate with others slowly makes it descend into an insular and paranoid state threatening their very existence.

Team Hermes, like most of the Ariane Circle, has always struggled to collaborate, their visions of how to make their world better often colliding with each other's. Far from their politics, however, are people, humans able to go beyond their differences to help each other grow past their difficulties.

But will it be enough to save the Team Hermes, and the Circle as a whole?

Main Characters

Anthony Kelvin

Introverted and cowardly but incredibly passionate about Backrooms history, Anthony Kelvin is one of the newest members of Team Hermes and possibly the one who fits there the least.

Abandoned as a baby due to its ability to mimic voices, Anthony has been raised within Homely Hotel on Level 11 alongside other backborn orphans, far from any Backrooms danger. Struggling to socialize due to his ability, he started to take shelter in the building's library, taking a special interest in the past of a world he was too scared to explore by himself.

As an adult, Anthony kept working in the Homely Hotel library for some time before a providential recruitment email, followed by a lucky meeting, allowed him to join Team Hermes as the first non-operative member in 2016.

Despite having made friends with Katya and Charlie, Anthony keeps struggling with self-confidence, rarely going on missions and easily getting overwhelmed by danger. Still, he remains a huge help for Team Hermes thanks to his ever-increasing knowledge of the Backrooms, allowing for the team to adapt to old and new threats alike.


Secondary Characters

Nyx

Nyxtl’ra is an an alien even by Backrooms standards, being an Aerospace engineer from Styx, a planet from another galaxy. Now stuck into the Backrooms and cut away from the rest of their species, Nyx now works with Team Hermes, studying humanity as they study them.

Despite their close bond with some of the members of the team, nyx still struggles to fit in, with human concepts such as gender, death or even their culture and language remaining esoteric to an extend. Despite this, they remain very attached to their friends which they view as their new family, and as accompanied Anthony, Katya and Charlie ever since.

Katya Hall

Katya Hall was, back in the Frontrooms, a medical student with ADHD, who found a new purpose in Team Hippocrates, then Hermes.

Diagnosed as HPI, her mother, a family doctor, decided to "help" her reach her "full potential", ton one day become a doctor. As such, she always was behind Katya, stricting controlling her life and her learning methods (based on what she used herself as a child). While she had no bad intentions per se, this made Katya develop a severe dependance to her mother, which led to difficulties in decision-making in the future, as she struggled to think by herself (a rather ironic fate for a medical student).

Furthermore, the constant cramming forced on her by her mother clashed with her ADHD, which led to increasing difficulties as she aged. Yet, all she could do is work more and more in a counter-intuitive way, leaving the social aspects of her life away. As such, Katya ever hard any friend, let alone socialize. With her mother's constant presence and control of her life, she started keeping her emotions to herself, with a cold, calculating facade expected from a soon-to-be medical student.

As she entered medical school, her difficulties only increased. Incapable of working efficiently, Katya continued to cram more and more, which, while it led to good grades and increasing knowledge, also made her spiral into depression, as she was incapable of meeting her mother's standards.

Her Frontrooms life ended with just one wrong step as she was coming back to school. Noclipping into Level 1, she wandered around for hours before stumbling upon a patrol from Team Hippocrates, who led her to their base. There, she was sheltered for several days, until the Circle decided to "hire" her thanks to her background and knowledge in the medical field, something the Backrooms were usually lacking.

Charlie Drake

  • Tallest of the three (1m80), rather muscular blonde with blue eyes (other distinctive traits?)
  • Boring asf life in the past, working as an accountant (or something like this idk) for the United Backrooms Delivery Service
  • Dreaming of adventure and exploration, joins Hermes bc of this (before Katya)
  • Extroverted, good at socializing, secretely envy other Hermes members for the respect they have inside the team (thanks to their experience)
  • lacking self-confidence due not being newer and with less exploration experience -> so tends to do risky things/be hot-headed to "prove himself"
    • also reckless because that's the only way he feels alive (struggle finding pleasure in the small things due to his lame old life)

Prequel stuff

Anthony isn't in the team yet, instead working in the Homely Hotel library in Level 11. Katya is working in Housekeeping as a Hippocrates agent (and befriended Antoine/someoneintheroom), then join Hermes after an agent exchange aimed to lesser tensions between Hippocrates and Hermes (exchanged organized by Pytheas).

Katya and Charlie becomes friends shortly after, despite how different they are (with Katya being calm and overserious, struggling with bonding with others and understanding others in general, while Charlie is an extroverted ball of energy hiding a profond lack of confidence.

Start

Anthony joins the Hermes Team, and the three characters meet and quickly become great friends despite their differences.

Phase 1 - Humble beginnings arc

The friend group start knowing each other better. As time goes, they start influencing and helping each other, as they open themselve to others. Katya and especially Anthony as still relatively new to the group, and each have different reasons to want to prove themselve here (Katya to overcome the disrespectful sights of the others because of her previous team, and Charlie since he is the only member to never have participated to an actual field operation.). Most entries are quite light-hearted and set up the worldbuilding pieces that will get used later on, and start developping the characters to a place where they will take part into bigger plots. The Ariane Circle and especially the Hermes Team is still a very organized and professional group, and while tensions exist, they do not seem impossible to resolve. While they remained in Hermes-2 at first, the team created a new base later on, and all three moved there as new assets (with Katya being able to see Antoine/someoneintheroom again, and presenting him to the others).
