Staff Roles

Staff Helpers

Staff helpers, despite their names, aren't part of staff, as they rather help them in their various tasks. The role can be acquired more easily than jstaff, but has more restrictions. A staff helper can't directly discuss policies and changes with staff (outside of community input), and doesn't have access to staff channels (although they will have access to maintenance and coding channels, as well as the secondary staff channel. They also have access to some of the oversight threads and pages. They also don't have any disc power and don't hold wiki permission unless they are specifically needed for a task.

Staff helper duties are centered around staff wikiprojects, helping staff achieve them much more easily. Their access to both maintenance and coding channels also allows them to discuss such topics with staff, helping them here as well, although they can't vote on anything. They also have access to the secondary staff channel on the staff server, where some more minor topics are discussed.

If a staff helper wants to enter staff as a jstaff, they will have to apply for jstaff as they cannot be promoted to this role.

Role on the Site

  • Working on the site wikiprojects
  • Participating in staff discussions in maintenance or coding channels
  • Participating in secondary staff discussions

Jstaff

Jstaff is a trial role given to newly recruited staff members after their application is accepted (returning staff members may directly become moderators due to their experience). This role allows staff to evaluate the new staff member, to see if they are active, mature and motivated enough to work on the wiki (for example if they have enough self-control or if they are able to keep up with staff discussions). While they obviously can and are encouraged to talk and give their input in any staff discussion, they won't be able to vote until they become full moderators (and therefore are fully trusted). They can mute and kick members, but cannot ban nor tempban. Jstaff have access to all channels of staff, both on the staff site, discord and staff server.

To become a moderator, a jstaff has to be promoted in the two full months following his application acceptance (therefore the current month of acceptance isn't relevant so one-week periods do not negatively affect the jstaff). If a jstaff can't be promoted after two months, they will be offered to either become a staff helper, or to leave staff duties entirely, depending on the reasons for the lack of promotion.

Role on the Site

  • Learns about the different duties of staff and how the teams operate
  • Learn and exercise judgement in which incidents require staff attention and which do not. (When in doubt, ask: Does this break a rule? If not, is it hurting or bothering anyone?)
  • Moderate and preside over chat and bring all necessary incidents to staff attention via the proper channels
  • Suggest changes or improvements to the site for discussion among staff
  • Provide input on projects such as rewrites of official pages and policy updates
  • Be active and motivated in order to become a full moderator

Moderators

Moderators (mods) are trusted staff members of the Backrooms Wiki, above junior staff, but below admins. They deal with moderation and management, and regularly participate in staff discussion or with the community on their feedback and suggestions. They basically are the main role on the staff team, but are divided in specific staff teams depending on what the specific moderators are interesting in working on. They have limited permissions on the site, but may be granted full administrator permissions on a temporary basis to help on wiki-wide technical projects.

Role on the Site

In addition to the roles of jstaff:

  • Enact disciplinary action (e.g. muting, kicking, and banning) when necessary, possibly on short notice.
  • Moderators are trusted to use their judgement on whether a breach of the rules requires immediate action or discussion.

Admins

Administrators (admins) are the top level of command on the Backrooms Wiki, above moderators and junior staff. They take the lead on staff processes and should usually be deferred to when a decision should be made, such as calling a vote.

They are trusted members of the staff that possess almost all possible permissions on the wiki and discord alike, and some of them (two? at most) also own some of the sites (like the sandboxes) and discord (staff servers like the appeal one). They also have the power to give vetos if all admins agree on it, and can make a proposition be accepted if at least half of them agree on it. Overall, they also lead the conversations in general, like the team captains.

There is a limit to how many admins the site can have. As of now, the limit is 6, and changing it requires a staff discussion.

In addition to the roles of mods and jstaff:

  • Use admin permissions to change server settings
  • Lead staff conversations
  • Accept and deny propositions in niche cases
  • handle all issues and matters requiring admin perms on both the site and the discord server

Staff team captain

  • Coordinate the operations of their team by maintaining a list of tasks to be done, structuring the plans of intended future activities, and managing the responsibilities and the duties of the team members.
  • Be on the lookout for community feedback and problems regarding their area of the site.
  • Initiate discussions, promote proposals, and manage the votes pertaining to their team.
  • Introduce new members to the fundamentals of the team and communicate useful information about procedures that may go unsaid, as well as little tips and tricks to make their work easier.
  • Submit their team's accomplishments to the Community Outreach team so that they can be compiled and shared with the public during the regular community updates.

Head admin

The head admin can be seen as the captain of the staff. They are an active staff member who are trusted, mature, possess leadership skills, and have some kind of a vision allowing the site to develop and move forward.

In order to help the site develop itself, they can, if needed, assign tasks to the respective teams, as they overall act as a leader of all staff teams, since they have an overall vision of the site that goes beyond each team as individuals. They are above team leaders when needed. They are trusted by the rest of staff, and will be demoted entirely if those permissions are abused. Their power is mainly one given because of the need of staff to be lead at some times, in order to be efficient.

Every six months, during a staff evaluation, staff votes on whether the head admin keeps their position, or it they should be swapped with another admin.
