boring

I use other people's stuff to make the story feel bigger, which is why I don't always do it
Level 206 brought in a lot of other people's levels to make it feel like a big story with layers to it, and the names from the exploration logs came from other pages (I no longer remember which ones)
and for stuff like 608, I suddenly bring in Backrooms Remodelling Co to do a big twist and status quo change
usually I leave other stuff be because it's either not something I've read or it doesn't interest me, and the stuff that does I usually like to keep in its own bubble both because I don't wanna complicate plots, and I like stuff to stand on its own, both for its own merit and not needing to be propped up by marvel cameos

usually it's just a case of me remembering them! sometimes I also backread page announcements to see if there's anything new and interesting I could reference
instead of pulling from the same stuff from X amount of years ago

I haven't written much that needs other pages referenced. For the Infinite Wanderer, I did mention 3 levels and a couple were by people I'm friends with.

I do wanna write more that references other people's work tho. There's an entity I found while replacing photos that never got an official author page but got mentioned in a level and tale and I do wanna mention them at least. I do think it's kinda awkward in terms of wanting to stick to the original and do your own thing. Idk, I want to do it more and ig I'll have to talk to more people about using their works

I do think talking to the original author also probabaly puts people off a bit. It's not bad cause that's just how it is
Especially if it's a newish writer and someone who has multiple works on site

but I do use someone else's lore (if you look hard enough) sometimes. Not often. More obviously in terms of just a level as a setting, sometimes referencing other stuff but not that frequently. The reason why I don't use other author's work is usually because I don't really read pages that much anymore (used to a lot a year ago and the years prior tho), and because I'm the kid in the corner that does my own thing and never learned what it means to "collaborate" /lh. Usually I just don't have a place to fit in other people's lore because what I write is so character based.

Well, yeah! I haven't messed around with canons much (besides my own, because as I said I haven't done much reading recently. Though I have read every single indus page). I am quite likely to use someone else's works if it pushes the theme I try to get across with my writing. Settings, characters, and conflicts (basically the entire narrative) are just tools to form a theme (like, central message). Because I'm not too well-versed in recent pages, I just don't have enough knowledge to really use other's pages to their full potential! I also am afraid to use someone else's character because I never use "plot armor" on any characters and it'd be awkward to just go "y'know what? Your POI is dead now" (I did that with Rey's character, with permission). If/when you read my future pages, you'll see that I cycle through characters, settings, and conflicts a lot. But what connects my writing together is the theme. More often than not, I feel like the theme I'm going for just doesn't click with pages, like at all.

truthfully I should do some more reading, but I don't 👀. Yeah I want to respect other people's writing, but like I said I'm the guy in the corner that's never heard of what it means to "collaborate" despite being on a collaborative site
Maybe I should change that…

often i get inspiration when reading other people’s stuff i get inspired and think of lore ideas i want to make.

usually it’s just references and using elements from the work, but sometimes it’s a large part of the point. for example, with hum 100hz heart of the universe was the seed the page sprung out of

it’s my concepts but it relies heavily on elements from other people. like, with my pages so far

level 280: the page is based on an image my friend made
level 59: the page is a rewrite
article with totally great ambience: heavy references to troubleshooting, it’s cringe even
level 5.2: a sublevel of level 5, deliberately written to feel like the pages of old
heart: story based on four images not made by me. however, the choice of the images and part of the concept was itself based on level 3. i also took inspiration from old backrooms reddit posts
hum 100hz: as i stated, the page blossomed out of my lore ideas for THITU.

in conclusion, i’m a fraud and all of my works are derivative. 😃👍

Does it interest me? Does it serve a purpose to the story I tell? Do I just want to mess around with something? Many such questions that troubles alba when he writes.
For now, my thing is using Level 4 as a background because of how bland it is otherwise

To answer further to that:

You can't really force people to use what's been written so far. Now, hopefully, everyone can find something that suits their inspirations, their desires, etc. Back then, and that was in 2022, I felt quite dissatisfied with had been written and the French Branch was…. empty. Hence, most of my first pages barely used any preexisting material, other than the occasional MEG mention for the sake of it.

1 Because I want to. It either depends if it connects well to my work or if I hypertfixate

2 smaller mentions are usually like settings or objects. Bigger mentions depend. Usually its entities I use or pois.

endrew

to make my page fit better into the huge jigsaw puzzle that is the backrooms, where everything is interconnected for an overall richer universe

links to levels, major GOIs that prove relevant to the page and can add another dimension to it, objects that may be useful to know of

Entities: I'm generally disinterested in them, hence I never use them
POI and canons: not sufficiently knowledgeable in them, so don't want to misinterpret other author's intentions

hmm not really an accessibility issue imo
each storyline/lore is very niche, which is cool if that's your thing, but i assume a casual fan would be prone to dismiss them

There's also the possibility that authors are focused on writing their own stuff, and haven't read that many on-site articles to begin with
Like how can you be interested in linking other pieces of lore if you don't know much of what is out there

goerman

When I use another author's lore, they are usually matches made in heaven. I try (very hard) to made it all relevant, and not just for convenient sake. You can see this especially in Liminal Echo — Phenomenon 7.

I'll be honest I wrote usually without a thought in my brain other than "hey we should write that." Which is probably why I never finished about any of my articles because I ran out of those moments.

frix

I FUCKING HATE THE BACKROOMS
ok no but actually
when i make anything, unless it's parody, i make self-contained stuff
it may be inspired by something else, but I don't like using someone else's work as a part of my work
cause it's not my place to extend their lore
(this is assuming the usage is major in a way)
(like, just saying the name object on the wiki isn't what i mean)
