Welcome to the translation hub!

The translation hub act as a list of every language hub made by the various international wikis of the Backrooms. Each language hub can host:

• Translated pages from international wiki sites that were originally written in another language, translated to this English wiki for your enjoyment
• Translated pages from this wiki, available to read in other languages.

Language hubs are maintained by language custodians which is a semi-staff member position on the site. They maintain the language hub and check over new translations. For more information, consult the FAQ below.

When a language on the Underrepresented Language Incubator gets 20 translations from english to their language, it can get a language hub on this page. If there is no language custodian, the hub will be managed by the english staff until one is found.

For international websites hosted beyond our english wiki, the prerequisites can be found down in the FAQ section.

Any Backrooms site held in another language that bases itself on, uses or expand on our wiki lore has the possibility to have a language hub here that can host both translation from english to the language and the opposite. Our wiki is also open to any collaboration propositions with international wikis for co-written projects or events.

Language Site Types

Underrepresented Languages

The underrepresented languages, also named ULI (Underrepresented Language Incubator, the old site who hosted those translations), are languages that don't have their own site due to a lack of translators or authors. Translations from english levels to those languages are therefore hosted directly on this wiki, and can be accessed either through the sidebar, the language component on the english page, or directly from their language hub.

Linked Language Wiki

A linked language wiki, more commonly named "branch" or "language wiki," is an international Wikidot site that uses the same lore as ours. This means that they translate English articles to their own language and expand the universe in their language by creating international articles that they can translate onto this wiki as well.

As they are run independently by a team of users who speak another language, decisions about how these sites are run and their rules are decided by their own staff teams and are not managed by the staff of this English wiki.

Potential differences

Some language wikis have different age requirements and as a result might host NSFW content on them. These are required to be hidden behind a content warning, so you'll never be exposed to this accidentally, but please respect some linked language wikis' age requirements for joining and don't assume you can join them just because you are a member of this wiki. If this causes problems for you as a translator, come in contact with the language custodian.

In addition, some language wikis use different CSS themes, for example some may use NuLiminal or Old Liminal themes, and some might choose to modify them. A site doesn't need to look just like this wiki to be linked (though it has to have a theme based on Liminal for compatibility).

Main Linked Language Wiki

In most cases, languages only have a single wiki where people write or translate. However, it can happen that multiple wikis of the same language exist that meet the criteria. In this case, the wiki that holds the most translations will be selected as the main linked language wiki (or simply "main language wiki"). This wiki will be linked onto the sidebar component or the translation component redirecting the members to a translated version of the English page on that page. Other than this, the main language wikis have no differences.

Posting Translations

How do I post a translation?

For translations from English to another language (being translations of english pages of the Backrooms english wiki, in the case of ULI, so languages without a wiki) you can post them in a language category. For example, Andalusian pages are in the AND category. This means you post it at a URL similar to http://backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/and:level-0.

If the language has one or more sites, you'll find the translation of EN pages into said languages directly on their respective sites.

For translations from another language wiki to English (so original pages made for the international wiki), you can post them like normal pages. The language's code, e.g. ru or it should be used as a page tag for the page, but otherwise they're normal pages. Use the exact same URL as on the alternate language wiki, please (for example, "http://fr-backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/phenomene-1-fr" will become "http://backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/fr:phenomene-1-fr"). The wiki doesn't need to be a linked language wiki (being a wiki site mentionned on the language hub) to have translations posted to this site, the pages can come from anywhere. What are the rules regarding translations?

The criticism of how well a translation is made regarding SPAG and respect to the original is being handled by the language custodians. However, any translation still needs to respect the rules of the wiki. This means no plagiarized page, no NSFW/gore content (depending on the degree, exceptions can be made by staff if possible, with the use of content warnings), and all images must conform to the licensing of the site (refer to the licensing guide if needed). You do not need a greenlight or a clear, just a go-to by one of the language custodian of your branch.

Where do I put my translation?

As said in the previous question, when you translate a page from another site, for example a C- level from the Chinese wiki, you should use the same name for the page on this English wiki. If you want to put it on the EN mainlist instead, you have to get permission from the original CN wiki author or else you're just plagiarizing the CN page.

But if you have permission, there's no reason for us not to allow it. However, keep in mind that aiming for the main list means it will have to go through the greenlighting process. This means the page may very well have to be modified to be posted there, therefore not being an actual 1:1 translation.

What about sub-layers?

The case of sublevels made by another wiki for levels of the english list is a specific one. Those sub-layers translated from other wikis can feature as sub-bullet points on the mainlist of EN levels, and should also get the language tag and be featured on the language hub.

They will therefore appear in two places, both in the sub-layer part of the language hub, and in the bullet point list below its parent level in the english level list.

What about deletion?

Translations, due to their lack of popularity, are subject to a different deletion threshold than the rest of the wiki. While things like grace period or deletion threshold (see deletions policy if needed) remain, but the number of the deletion threshold remains at below 0 votes, instead of below +10 with at least three downvotes.

While it is possible for anyone to rewrite a translation, they would need the go-ahead of the original author of the article (not the translator) to do so. This is also true for deleted translations, unlike the case of deleted original work of the site.

The translator still remains the custodian of his own translation, and can operate changes on it if needed.

Language Custodians

What are language custodians?

Language custodians are the moderators of the language hub of their own wiki. Indeed, the posting process of translations isn't monitored by the english staff nor by our greenlighters. Instead, a language hub from an international wiki can

How do I become a language custodian?

If you want to manage a language hub on the site, contact staff. We'll make sure you're active, and if possible we'll verify you actually speak the language. But it should be pretty easy to get yourself set up as a custodian, so — especially if a language lacks a custodian — please don't be afraid to reach out!

Being Represented in the Translation Hub

How can my language be added on this hub?

Underrepresented Languages

In the case of ULI, if you notice your language isn't on the hub, you can start translating for it by sending a private message to a staff member (see Meet the Staff) to tell us your language and give us at least three translations made for this language.

After the hub is created, you will be granted the role of language custodian for this language, and will therefore be able to freely publish translations for this language using the special language category at your disposal, that will be redirected to by the translation component. You will also have a language tag allowing you to sort translated pages more easily.

Language Wikis

As said above, the critera for a language wiki to be present on this hub are the following:

• At least 10 pages, whether they are translations or original articles.
• If the site has any NSFW content it has to be behind adult content warnings so our <18 members cannot access it if they visit your wiki. The age limit of the site needs to reflect this as well.
• The wiki must not be broken in some way e.g. a broken home page, and having a base theme that is compatible with the one used on this wiki for translation convenience.
• The wiki must have existed continuously for at least 3 months.

Once staff will have verified them, you can asign any number of people that will be the language custodians of this language.
